Case studies are in-depth discussions of a specific instance of something. For example, in medical research you'll see case studies published where the authors focus on a specific patient to study how a condition is affecting them or being treated.
In business research, case studies are generally published as articles and usually consist of the authors sharing an example of how a business handled a specific situation. For example, maybe a company rolls out a new HR initiative that angers employees and winds up back-firing - a case study article would discuss what happened, explain where it could have gone wrong, and usually suggest some ways that others might avoid that mistake.
Case studies can be really useful for getting real-world examples of how ideas have been put into practice and succeeded or failed in actual businesses.
