The properties of artificial dielectric meta-materials depend primarily on the type of inclusions or “molecules” considered as well as their distribution in a host medium. An investigation into the scattering characteristics of a single molecule is typically the first step towards a better understanding of the electromagnetic properties of such meta-materials. The desirable properties of these meta-materials are the strongest in the vicinity of the resonant frequencies of the inclusions. Some common types of molecule geometries that were considered in the past for artificial dielectric materials include simple dipoles and spheres. One of the main drawbacks, however, of using such geometries is the fact that they produce narrowband results. In this research, we consider a fractal approach, combining aspects of both the dipole and sphere resulting in an inclusion with a greater number of resonances. The results of this initial investigation suggest the possibility of creating a multiband or even, in some instances, a broadband artificial dielectric meta-material.
