Message from Mrs Noall

I am delighted with how many children took part in the summer reading and maths challenges. We have been slightly overwhelmed with this success and have needed to order more badges - this is great news! Miss Woods announced the reading challenges on Friday - if your child wasn't mentioned then please don't fret! Miss Woods will find your child to sort this out as we want to ensure that everyone who took part is celebrated. The maths challenge results have been delayed due to Doodle Maths but we are almost ready to announce these too. A super well done to everyone!

News and Events

Year 6 Camp

Good luck to all our Year 6 children who are heading off to Grittleton this week. We know that you will enjoy this enriching experience and learn to challenge yourselves, bond as a team, make new friends and create life-long memories. We're all hoping that you enjoy some fine weather too!

Harvest Festival Donations - next week

A reminder that this year as part of our Harvest celebrations, we are asking for donations for The Nest Project. If you are able to donate to this cause as part of our Harvest celebrations, then we ask your children bring their donations to school on the day of their service next week.

Charity Cake Sale

Next Friday after school Mrs Dallimore and Mrs Dando are organising a charity cake sale. In previous years Mrs Roughan has organised a MacMillan Coffee Morning so in her absence we have decided to organise a cake sale where proceeds will be split between MacMillan and a charity of Mrs Roughan's choice. Please pop into the hall after school to buy a cake in support. If anyone is able to send in a bake in support then we would be very grateful.

Attendance Matters

Are you on target?

See how your year group is doing on our Attendance Matters web page.

Remember good punctuality ensures that your child is getting the best possible chance to succeed. Our school day starts at 830am.

Reminders

Coats!

We have lots of children not bringing coats to school despite the weather. We will play outside in most weather and a coat is therefore essential each day. Thank you.

Photos

The deadline for photo requests is Tuesday 8th October.

Lunch orders

Please talk to your child about what you have ordered for their lunch. We cannot change this order on the day if your child tells us they'd prefer a different option.

Head lice

Head lice and nits are very common in young children and their families.  In order to try and prevent headlice spreading from one child to another, it is really important that all parents/ carers check their child's hair on a regular basis. You can get advice and support for managing and treating headlice here: NHS head lice and nits

Communication and Language Development

Traditional nursery rhymes are fantastic vocabulary boosters. They often feature a pleasing rhythmic pattern and simple repetitive phrases that babies and young children find easy to remember and repeat. In order to develop their phonological awareness, children need to be repeatedly exposed to spoken language and nursery rhymes provide the perfect way to do this. Traditional nursery rhymes enhance children’s pronunciation and their ability to hear vowels and consonants through the rhymes.

Ring-a-Ring-a-Rosies

Ring-a-ring-a-Rosies

A pocket full of posies

Atishoo!, Atishoo!

We all fall down

The King has sent his daughter

To fetch a pail of water

Atishoo!, Atishoo!

We all fall down!

The cows are in the meadow

Lying fast asleep

Atishoo!, Atishoo!

We all jump up!

FUN FACT FOR PARENTS

What is the story behind Ringa Ringa Roses?

Ring a Ring o Roses was sung during the Great Plague of London in 1665.  The “rosie” is the red rash that appears on the skin. The first sign of bubonic plague.  The “pocket full of posies” hid the stench of the plague. Coughing and sneezing was the final stage of the plague.

You may already know that this year, we are part of the PINS (Partnership for Inclusion of Neurodiversity in Schools) pilot project. The aim of the project is to make it easier for schools and parent carers to work together to support children with neurodiversity and make sure they get the best possible experience of education. In BaNES there are twelve schools taking part in PINS and Peasedown St John Primary School is one of them. As part of the PINS pilot, BaNES Parent Carer Forum are setting up meetings with parents and carers from each of the twelve schools. The first meeting at our school will be on Monday 14th October at 2.15pm.  Please see the letter with this newsletter for more information.

Evo Sports at PSJ

Well the weather certainly had us guessing this week during PE lessons but the children have all persevered through and shown good resilience despite a few challenges. And speaking of challenges, here are a few photos of Year 2 during their team building lesson in PE this week!

This week at after school club was wildlife week and so to recognise this the children designed and created bird feeders and bug hotels. The children also made wildlife picture frames and hedgehogs made of toilet tubes and leaves, which I think you will agree look amazing.

Next week is space week so we will be making our very own solar system.

Evo Sports will be running a half term holiday club. Email them at evosports7@gmail.com for more information.

Our next meeting is TONIGHT, Monday 30th September 7.30pm at the The Hive; everyone is welcome to join us.

Knife Crime Awareness Event for Parents and Carers

The B&NES Violence Reduction Partnership (VRP) are pleased to announce that we have now arranged a parental knife crime awareness event at St Mark’s School on Monday 21st October 2024, starting at 6pm.  Please book through our Eventbrite Link below.

The event is aimed at parents and carers who would like to know more about the dangers of knife crime or are concerned that their children are at risk. They aim to increase awareness of key issues surrounding knife crime, empowering you and your children to make informed and positive decisions to stay safe.

You will have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers with lived experience, who have been personally affected by knife crime. There will also be a presentation by Street Doctors, followed by a panel discussion with the opportunity to ask questions.

The Bath & North East Somerset Violence Reduction Partnership (VRP) is a multi-agency partnership that aims to prevent and reduce violence in the area. We work to understand and address the root causes of violence, to prevent further violent crimes from occurring in the future. We provide resources and support the work of professionals and community groups who help children at risk or involved in serious violence.

For queries, please email VRP_Events@bathnes.gov.uk.
