What is Intervention?

If the core program, whether it’s reading or math isn't meeting the individual needs of the student, a targeted instruction needs to be implemented. Our SST team will meet and discuss the areas for improvement. We consider students' individual strengths, assessment data, and conversations with teachers and parents to determine how we can best support each individual student. Six to eight weeks is the ideal time to see if a student is progressing. Progress monitoring is used on a bi-weekly basis to determine if the intervention is working.

What does this mean for my child?

During WIN time at school, your child will receive targeting academic instruction. Best of all, your child will be on a path to fill in gaps by following a step by step approach known as "response to intervention." Your child will be engaged in research based intervention activities to fill in specific gaps. They will also be assigned activities to complete at home as part of their plan.

What programs do I use?

The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing® (LiPS®) Program develops phonemic awareness—the ability to determine the identity, number, and order of sounds within words. The program teaches students to discover and label the oral-motor movements of phonemes. The established articulatory feedback enables students to verify the identity, number, and sequence of sounds in simple, complex, and multisyllabic words. The sensory-cognitive function of phonemic awareness is applied to reading, spelling, and speech.

West Virginia Phonics involves making connections between letters and sounds and various spelling patterns. Beginning readers must learn to apply these connections to their reading and spelling. The goal of phonics instruction is to provide children with the skills they need in order to recognize words automatically.

The Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention is a powerful, short-term intervention, that provides daily, intensive, small-group instruction, which supplements classroom literacy teaching. LLI turns struggling readers into successful readers with engaging leveled books and fast-paced, systematically designed lessons.
