Unit 5: November 4th - November 19th

In Unit 5 students will dive into the rock cycle and the carbon cycle. For the rock cycle, students will learn about weathering, erosion, and deposition in order to describe how sedimentary rocks form. They also learned how sedimentary rocks are categorized by the size, type, and sorting of the sediments that make up the rock. Students also learned how rocks can be deformed through heat and pressure to form metamorphic rocks, and melt completely and recool to form igneous rocks. For Igneous rocks, students learned about the color classification of Felsic, Intermediate, and Mafic, and crystal size classification of Intrusive and Extrusive.

For the Carbon Cycle students will learn how carbon is cycled through the hydrosphere, biosphere, geosphere, and atmosphere students will better understand how a change in one level of the carbon cycle causes effects on the other spheres. For example, if we add more plant-based biomass to the earth, more carbon will be pulled from the atmosphere into the biosphere.
