Canva is a popular graphic design platform for creating various visual content such as posters, presentations, social media graphics, and worksheets. It offers a user-friendly interface, thousands of templates, images, fonts, and design elements, and can be used to design classroom materials, create engaging student projects, develop presentations, and create social media posts or flyers.
Canva is geared towards students in grades 3-12, but can be introduced to younger students with guidance. I can be used in a variety of different content areas, such as ELA, Social Studies, Science, Art, and Technology/STEM, which focus on creating visual summaries, timelines, graphics, posters, and infographics.
Example Classroom Use of Canva:
In a 6th-grade Social Studies class, students can use Canva to create an infographic about an ancient civilization they are studying (e.g., Ancient Egypt or the Roman Empire). They include facts about geography, culture, government, and inventions, using icons, charts, and images. This supports research, synthesis of information, and visual literacy.
Canva integrates with Microsoft Immersive Reader, an assistive technology that aids students with reading difficulties by offering text-to-speech, font and spacing adjustments, translation into multiple languages, line focus, and syllable splitting. This integration ensures accessibility for students with learning differences, visual impairments, or language barriers.
