Mock Caldecott Contenders
Week 3
Setting
- Where and when the story takes place
- Illustrations should help you visualize (make pictures in your head) where and when the story takes place
- Illustrations should transport you into the world of the book
As you watch the read-aloud videos, ask yourself:
Do the illustrations help me understand where and when the story in this book takes place?
Can I imagine what it feels like to be in this book?

Activities
What choices did the illustrators make?
Illustrators make very careful, thoughtful choices when creating illustrations. Look at the side by side images from Hike and Prairie Days in the slideshow.
What do you notice? What is similar about the story and images? What is different? Why do you think the illustrators made these choices?
Your turn: write & illustrate your story!
Both books this week told a story or memory from the author's childhood. Now it is YOUR turn to share your story: write about and illustrate a memory of a favorite place, tradition, or activity.
How does your story begin and end? What is the setting? What details will you include in your illustrations to help the viewer feel transported into the setting? How will you orient your illustrations: portrait style, like Hike, or landscape style, like Prairie Days?
You can print out one of the sheets posted, or just use a blank piece of paper.
Drawing Activity
Pete Oswald drew pictures in the block letters of the title Hike. Pick something that you love to do and write the word in open letters then illustrate what that activity is inside the letters of your word.
