Science & Engineering
At PSAS the study of science and engineering is woven throughout the curriculum and one of the things that helps us stand-alone from other schools. For the past 3 years our 8th grade state science scores have been the best in the district and in the top 20 of the entire state. All grade levels are encouraged to do hands on science experiments and make the subject come to life. For the past two years PSAS has been the Southern Colorado Design and Engineering champions at the CSU-Pueblo engineering contest. In the spring of 2017 a brand new “Maker Space” modular is being constructed and placed on the grounds to give students an even better place to learn how to build, invent, and construct. Taking STEAM education to a whole new level in a classroom designed for hands on creativity. We are preparing students for the next step in their educational journey.
PSAS was founded 22 years ago on the premise that the ARTS would be a major component of the curriculum and just as important as the core academic classes. To this day when one walks through the hallways of PSAS you can see that Art does have a very important place in this school as you see student work on display. From ceramics, to watercolor, to sculpture and photography all art forms are embraced at this school. We put on our own Art Shows throughout the year as well as participate in other art shows throughout the region. We truly believe allowing one to express themselves artistically allows them to focus better on their core subjects.
Two years ago PSAS created a Marching Band program to go along with its concert band program, and it continues to grow in popularity with over 65 students participating in the program this year. In the first year of competition PSAS placed 3rd in the middle school category at the Canon City Blossom Festival. The music program at PSAS is much more than that it’s also concert band and vocal music. Each winter and spring we put on a 5th through 8th grade concert that fills the Auditorium at Centennial High School. The Concert features some of the most musically talented students in all of southern Colorado. Finally every Spring PSAS puts on a full scale Musical featuring anywhere from 35 to 50 PSAS students. Singing, acting, costumes set changes we do it all. Some of our past titles include, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin Jr., Pocahontas to name a few.
