Science & Engineering
At PSAS the study of science and engineering is woven throughout the curriculum and one of the things that helps us stand-alone from other schools. For the past 3 years our 8th grade state science scores have been the best in the district and in the top 20 of the entire state. All grade levels are encouraged to do hands on science experiments and make the subject come to life. For the past two years PSAS has been the Southern Colorado Design and Engineering champions at the CSU-Pueblo engineering contest. In the spring of 2017 a brand new “Maker Space” modular is being constructed and placed on the grounds to give students an even better place to learn how to build, invent, and construct. Taking STEAM education to a whole new level in a classroom designed for hands on creativity. We are preparing students for the next step in their educational journey.
PSAS was founded 22 years ago on the premise that the ARTS would be a major component of the curriculum and just as important as the core academic classes. To this day when one walks through the hallways of PSAS you can see that Art does have a very important place in this school as you see student work on display. From ceramics, to watercolor, to sculpture and photography all art forms are embraced at this school. We put on our own Art Shows throughout the year as well as participate in other art shows throughout the region. We truly believe allowing one to express themselves artistically allows them to focus better on their core subjects.
Both our Marching Band and Concert Band programs are celebrated groups because of their accomplishments. For the past two years, Concert Band has out-scored all Pueblo Middle Schools at the Blossom Festival in Canon City. In the past four years, Marching Band has earned one 3rd Place and two 2nd Place finishes for Middle School Marching Band at the Blossom Festival. They have also earned Outstanding Drum Major and Outstanding Drumline twice. At the Festival in the Parks Competition in Denver, they earned 1st Place Marching Band. Several of our band students have also earned spots in the Pueblo All-City Middle School Honor Band. Not only is our band program celebrated, but our newly reformed choir program is earning accolades. Last year they earned the highest competition score earned at PSAS in over a decade. Also, several students auditioned for earned spots in the Colorado All-State Elementary Choir at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. Each winter and spring, we produce a 5th-8th-grade concert. These concerts are held at some of the largest performance venues in Pueblo and are attended beyond seating capacity. Our concerts feature some of the most musically talented students in all of Southern Colorado. Finally, every spring, PSAS puts on a full-scale dramatic performance featuring anywhere from 35 to 50 students. Singing, acting, musical performances, costumes, set changes, and all other required parts of a large stage performance are included. Some of our past titles include Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin Jr., and Pocahontas to name a few.
