Hi! My name is Sylwia Popkin and I'm the English as a New Language Teacher.
I received my Bachelor's degree in Childhood Education at Queens College and my Master's Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at College of Mount Saint Vincent.
I believe that all English Language Learners (ELLs) should be given as much exposure and access to the English language as possible through rigorous instruction. In our ENL program, I ensure that ELLs across all proficiency levels can develop their English to help them succeed in their class, as well as outside of the school setting. I use various ENL methods as well as home language support to make our Newcomer ELLs feel comfortable in their new school environment. Students with more advanced English skills receive lots of support in learning academic vocabulary, deepening discussions around texts and preparing for various state tests.
I was born in Poland and moved to New York with my family when I was 13 years old. Being an ELL student myself, I know the process of acquiring English first-hand and the struggles that my students face, as I've faced them too. I think this personal experience has truly helped prepare me for being an ENL teacher and I'm very grateful for it.
This year, I'm looking forward to working with ELLs in grades 1, 4 and 5. I'm eager to continue working with students I've known from the previous year, as well as students new to our building and to our country! I can't wait to see the strides that they will all make as they learn English. It is thanks to them I love working at our school because it is such a diverse community where we can all learn from one another.
