PS 194 Raoul Wallenberg is named after a Swedish diplomat and humanitarian who stood up against the Nazi regime during World War II, using his intelligence and cunning to outsmart Nazi soldiers, saving thousands of Jewish people by giving them Swedish "Shutzpass" (protective passports) and offering them shelter in buildings under the Swedish flag. On January 14, 1945, Raoul Wallenberg was captured by the Soviet army and detained, never to be seen again. In 1981, US Congressman Tom Lantos, one of those saved by Wallenberg, sponsored a bill making Wallenberg an honorary citizen of the United States, the second person ever to receive this honor.
