[TYRA Talk] 2025-11-08
|| 摘要(Abstract):
Taiwan exhibits rich linguistic diversity, complex history, and geographical diversity. To-gether, these create a nuanced context for examining areal patterns and contact-induced linguistic features. One example is Taiwan Mandarin, in which the sibilant /tʂ/ undergoes deretroflexion to /ts/, distinguishing it from Mandarin varieties spoken in China (Kubler, 1985; Chuang and Fon, 2010; Fon, 2020).
The current literature lacks an overarching and systematic perspective on Taiwan’s language contact phenomenon. This research addresses this gap by conducting a Bayesian statistical analysis of contact effects in Taiwan and its surrounding regions. We estimate the distribution of 16 selected phonemes characteristic of the 123 languages or dialects spoken in Taiwan and beyond. We employ the multivariate probit model, incorporating the Gaussian Process to control for spatial dependencies, and the phylogenetic regression to account for language family confounds (Guzmán Naranjo and Mertner, 2023).
