楊佳翰

Jia-han Yang is a graduate student in the Applied Research and Evaluation program at the College of Education and Human Development at Temple University. As a passionate educator with a strong interest in intercultural communication, he began his involvement as a volunteer teacher and as a teaching assistant for English-medium classes in 2021. The following year, he launched his research project on English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) in classrooms. Currently, his research interests include bilingualism, English language learning in higher education, students' perceptions of the higher education experience, and critical thinking. Outside of research, he enjoys volunteering and traveling worldwide—gaining insights from students across different cultures, values, and educational practices through conferences, travel, and events.

|| 摘要(Abstract):

While motivation has often been used to predict language learning success, few studies have examined its interaction with aptitude and assessment outcomes in classroom contexts. This mixed-methods study investigates links between learner aptitude, motivation, and academic performance among English language learners across four classes. Quantitative analyses explored relationships among aptitude, motivation, and institution-administered exam scores. Qualitative data—drawn from class observations and instructor interviews—provided insight into how teachers interpret and respond to these learner traits. Results indicate that extrinsic motivation and aptitude significantly predict word stress recognition and assessment outcomes. Instructor perspectives revealed partial alignment between teaching strategies and students’ learning profiles. These results highlight the significance of acknowledging individual differences and investigating alternative approaches to teacher and student evaluation.
