Asutosh College, formerly known as South Suburban College, started its journey in the year 1916 under the visionary leadership of Sir Asutosh Mookerjee, popularly known as “the tiger of Bengal”. The dream of 1916 has already crossed 100 long years and stands like an unquestioned reality. Asutosh College was established to cater the need of the residents of South Calcutta for an institute of UG education. Its reputation, however, now attracts numerous students from other districts of the State as well as a significant number of students from other states and even neighbouring countries. Without compromising on its reputation as one of the foremost Kolkata colleges for imparting UG education in basic sciences and humanities, the college is fast gearing itself to meet the changing demands on education. Asutosh College is marching ahead with its sole objective of providing quality education to all.
It is one of the oldest Departments in India offering a course in Mathematics at the Undergraduate level. As the years passed by, the Department started Honours Course in Mathematics and the students excelled in the University Examinations many a time. Many of the past students are recognized Mathematicians. Over the years the Department has continued to maintain a distinctive competence and is holding its flag fluttering atop with aplomb.
