On a beautiful weekend, Joon and Yoosoon would love to go hiking with colleagues and graduate students in the picturesque national/state parks near Bloomington, Indiana. This photo was taken when Joon, Yoooson, and two former graduate students Bo Hu (first left) and Berg Cui (first right) reached the top of a hill when hiking in Brown County State Park on a crisp autumn day in 2014.

Joon taught an introductory probability and statistics course for the first-year MA students at Seoul Nation University in the spring of 1998. He entered the classroom with a mug of coffee in one hand and introduced various concepts. He talked about measure-theoretic probability and the basics of statistical inference. His lecture was quite succinct and to the point. It gradually revealed one concept to another, in a natural flow, yet allowing for zero compromises on the necessary rigor of the material. He explained extremely complex concepts using various real-life analogies. His lectures were not merely about theorem-proofs. They were about stories. Why this definition of measurability? Why this definition of conditional expectations? What’s the meaning of population, sample, and distributions? What is the main point of statistical inference? What do we want from all this apparatus after all? Joon showed us how various deep concepts work together in a big picture. He showed us a world; quite a new one for me then.
As a student, I entered his class knowing nothing about anything. Soon I became enthralled by his lectures. I developed a desire to stay in this new world he showed us, forever. In this world, what looked hostile and menacing at first are reduced to things that are manageable and comfortable, like small, warm, smooth pebbles you pick from a beach: solid yet comfortable in your hand. However, I did not believe then that my chances to enter academia were very high. It was just a dream. I did not think such a thing was possible for a mediocre student that was me.
Joon was my MA thesis advisor at Seoul National University. He taught me many things about doing research. He opened the way for me to be trained by Peter and Don. Now more than 25 years have passed since. I think I have some experiences in academia, good, bad, and often, confusing. However, the example of scholarship he showed me as a teacher and researcher still guides me. He planted into me a small, yet enduring desire; to produce a good paper, to produce it like a skilled craftsman. Given the high standards he showed me, I feel far behind. It is clear to me that I can never avoid remaining a student. With a teacher like Joon, however, it is good to be a student.
