Lady J

Chartering Notes

The Lady J is a Cooper 353 that is available for charter for members of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club. This web site has been created for the benefit of future charterers and the volunteers running the program to speed the chartering and checkout process and hopefully make for more enjoyable charters by:

  • Providing new charterers with useful information including background on the boat's layout and mechanicals before they board.
  • Providing a repository for relevant charter documents
  • Posting news on the Lady J program
  • Allowing charterers to post stories on their Lady J adventures and submit additional helpful info

Comments and additional info are always welcome.

The Lady J Team

The Lady J is a Cooper 353, a 35 ft pilothouse cruising sloop built in 1981. The boat is moored at the RVYC Scott Point outstation for the cruising season, providing convenient access to the Gulf Islands. The Cooper 353 was designed and built in Vancouver by local designer and shipwright Stan Huntingford.

The Lady J program is run and supported by club volunteers to provide members with access to a cruising vessel at economical rates. The program is accordingly not supported with the same level of service as a commercial charter company would provide. Charterers are asked to pitch in and effect their own repairs if possible. Potential charterers should be aware of this and, if they have any concerns, do their due diligence with members who have experience with chartering the vessel before they book their cruise.

Reservations this year are available are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Peak season (29 Jun to 1 Sep) requires charters to be a seven day period from Saturday noon to Saturday noon. The 2019 Peak Season charter fee is $200/day plus taxes.

Off season, shorter charters are available, there is flexibility with start/end dates and the rate is $150/day plus taxes.

The Lady J can sleep two people in a double v-berth in the forward cabin and 4 in the main cabin in a double berth to starboard, single berth to port and a starboard quarter berth, see plan below.

Realistically, with gear and provisions its comfortable capacity is more like 4 people for anything more than a very cozy overnight. Note also that the dinghy can only accommodate 2 adults max, so plan your trip accordingly.
