Knights are reminded of some of the following upcoming Columbian activities:
The District 36 "Night at the Races" will be held on June 22. Please contact Financial Secretary Patrick Turturro for tickets and further information.
The Long Island Assembly of the Knights of Columbus will be having their Independence Day Parade on June 29. The festivities begin with 9:30am Mass at St. Paul's Church (Court Street and Congress Street). Please contact the Financial Secretary, or Grand Knight SK Louis Carrera for more details.
The Kings County Conference will be supporting the Special Olympics on June 30. Please contact the Financial Secretary or the Grand Knight for more details.
Baron DeKalb Council No. 1073 will be hosting a Summer festivity on July 14. Please contact the Financial Secretary or Grand Knight for more details. Questions may also be directed to the Baron DeKalb Knights who are members of St. Brendan Parish.
In an effort to stimulate more participation, it was decided to reschedule the monthly rosary to the first Monday of every month at 7:00pm. This change will begin with the July Rosary.
Knights are reminded that our participation in the Corpus Christi activities - especially the procession - is greatly desired, and it is hoped that we will make a good showing.

St. Brendan - Morning Star Council No. 294 offers its profound thanks to SK James Nania, the departing District Deputy of District 36, for all his hard work and assistance, and wishes him continued success in his future endeavors. On a related note, we heartily welcome the incoming District Deputy, SK Ed McGibbons, and offer him our very best wishes in his new role.
As per the May meeting...
Knights are reminded the we will be recruiting at the Masses on the weekend of May 11-12. All Knights are asked to assist with this effort, as individually available.
Related to the above, Knights are further reminded that we will be hosting First and Second Degree Ceremonies on Wednesday, May 22, beginning at 7:30pm. While we will not be primarily running this event, we hope, as the hosting council, to have a good show of support.
Knights are reminded that, in addition to the aforementioned recruitment effort, the 11am Mass on Sunday, May 12 is the monthly "Knights' Mass", and are encouraged to attend.
Preliminary discussions were begun about changing the day of the monthly "Rosary for Life and Vocations", in an effort to stimulate further attendance.
Preliminary nominations were held for Council Officer Elections, to be held at the June Meeting. Further nominations will be held at the June Meeting, to be followed by the actual elections. All Third Degree Knights are invited to consider taking an active role in the council leadership.
Knights are reminded that District 36 will be hosting its "Night at the Races" fundraiser on June 22, at SS. Simon and Jude, and are encouraged to attend.
As per the April meeting...
Knights are reminded about the April 14 Blood Drive, to be conducted between 9am and 3:30pm. While the New York Blood Center and its personnel will handle all of the key details relating to that effort, as the drive is under the sponsorship of the Council, there should be at least 1 Knight present throughout the duration of the Blood Drive, helping people in and out of the Blood Center van, etc.
Knights are further reminded that the 11am Mass on April 14 will be the first of the planned monthly "Knights' Masses", and are encouraged to attend, wearing their Council 294 shirts.
St. Brendan - Morning Star Council No. 294 has been asked to observe the first hour or so of adoration at the Repository Tabernacle on Holy Thursday night, running from approximately 9pm to 10pm. Naturally, any Knight who wishes to stay until Adoration at the Repository concludes, at 11pm, is welcome to.
St. Brendan - Morning Star Council No. 294 will be hosting a degree ceremony on May 22. This will definitely be for the First Degree, and, pending further discussion with District 36, may be further expanded to include the Second Degree as well.
St. Brendan - Morning Star Council No. 294 salutes its Grand Knight, Dr. Louis Carrera, who has earned the Fourth Degree of membership in the Knights of Columbus, entitling him to the honorific of Sir Knight.
As per the March meeting...
Further conversation was held regarding the April 14 Blood Drive. Based upon the turnout at the December 2, 2018 Blood Drive, the New York Blood Center has agreed to commit to a longer session, in the hopes that this Blood Drive will see a similar turnout.
Preliminary discussions were begun regarding additional fundraising efforts - including a possible "Radio Bingo" night - and other forms of parish outreach, including the possible creation of a monthly "Knights' Mass".
As per the February meeting...
St. Brendan - Morning Star Council No. 294 offers its thanks and congratulations to Patrick Turturro, who has agreed to serve as our new Financial Secretary.
Preliminary plans were announced for the sponsorship of another Blood Drive, to be held on Sunday, April 14 (that's Palm Sunday this year to those of you who memorize liturgical calendars). The New York Blood Center was quite pleased with the results of the December Blood Drive, and has high hopes for another successful effort. Further details will be made available as plans are finalized.
St. Brendan - Morning Star Council No. 294 is pleased to announce that after two years of provisional approval from the Kings County and New York State organizations, the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus has formally granted approval to the renaming of "Morning Star Council No. 294" to "St. Brendan - Morning Star Council No. 294". We thank the New York State Deputy SK Ken Latham for presenting our petition to Supreme Council, and we especially thank our District Deputy, SK James Nania, for his tireless lobbying on our behalf.
A Special Announcement...
St. Brendan - Morning Star Council No. 294 mourns the death of Rev. Msgr. Rocco D. Villani (1928-2019), who spent over half of his priestly career at St. Brendan's.
While Msgr. Villani was not a Knight, he was a keenly important member of the Parish of St. Brendan. To that end, it is our hope that St. Brendan - Morning Star Council No. 294 will make a good showing at his services.
The Wake and Funeral will all be held at St. Brendan's. The Wake will be Thursday (2pm-5pm, 6pm-9pm) and Friday (2pm-5pm). On Friday, there will also be a Vigil Mass (7:30pm). The Funeral will be held on Saturday, at 10:30am.
All Knights are asked to make every effort to be in attendance.
As per the January meeting...
Parish fundraising efforts were discussed, with an eye for how the council could contribute to and hopefully enhance these efforts.
Other council initiatives, both in term of fundraisers and other forms of activity and interaction with the community at large, were also discussed.
St. Brendan - Morning Star Council No. 294 offers a hearty "Thanks and Best Wishes" to Mike Guastamacchia, our inaugural Financial Secretary. Mike has stepped away from the role, but promises to remain involved in the council, if perhaps from a distance. SK Fr. Peter Gillen, our Chaplain and Treasurer, will fill the Financial Secretary role on an interim basis, until a more long-term candidate can be approved.
As per the December meeting...
Our thanks to all Knights who participated in the Christmas Wreath Sale. Our thanks, too, to all those who purchased a wreath. Without your support, the Sale would not have been possible.
St. Brendan-Morning Star Council No. 294 wishes everyone a Merry and Blessed Christmas, and a Happy and Healthy New Year.
A Special Announcement...
As discussed at the October meeting, efforts are underway in the process of the Council's assumption of responsibility for the Christmas Wreath Sale, conducted in conjunction with the Parish Christmas Fair.
We will be selling wreaths on Saturday, December 1, from 11am - 8:30pm, and on Sunday, December 2, from 9am - 4pm. We will need a minimum of 2 Knights at all times.
We will also need Knights on the morning of Friday, November 30 (exact time TBA), in order to facilitate the receiving and organizing of the wreath stock, prior to the sale itself.
Sunday, December 2 is also the Blood Drive, being held from 9:30am - 2pm. While the New York Blood Center and its personnel will handle all of the key details relating to that effort, as the drive is under the sponsorship of the Council, there should be at least 1 Knight present throughout the duration of the Blood Drive, helping people in and out of the Blood Center van, etc.
In short, we will need several Knights on the morning of Friday, November 30. On Saturday, December 1, we will then need a minimum of 2 Knights between 11am and 8:30pm. Finally, we will need a minimum of 3 Knights on Sunday, December 2, between 9am and 2pm, and a minimum of 2 Knights for the remaining hour of 3pm - 4pm.
The success of any undertaking is dependent upon the commitment of its participants. The events of December 1 & 2 represent the first significant public activities of St. Brendan - Morning Star Council in the life of the parish. It is, therefore, imperative that a good performance be provided by us, and that a good impression be created in the minds of our fellow parishioners. To that end, all Knights are asked to contribute their very best to the successful conduct of these activities.
As per the November meeting...
Several of our Officers were formally installed at the ceremony held in conjunction with Cafiero Council No. 7236. Our thanks once again to our Brother Knights at Cafiero Council.
We recently received the updated Faith In Action program from Supreme Council. Faith In Action describes four areas of activity that all councils are asked to participate in: "Faith", "Family", "Community", and "Pro-Life". We look forward to further determining how our current activities line up with the objectives of Faith In Action, and to exploring new ideas and opportunities for Council activities.
Knights are reminded that the Christmas Wreath sale will be held on December 1-2, with prep work commencing on November 30. Please read-over the above Special Announcement for further details.
St. Finbar Council No. 15728 is sponsoring a Mass on Monday, December 17, at St. Finbar Church, which will feature a relic of St. Padre Pio.
The Pro Vita Mass for the Archdiocese of New York will be held on Sunday, January 20 at 10am at St. Patrick's Cathedral. The Pro Vita Mass for the Diocese of Brooklyn will be held on Saturday, January 26 at 5pm at St. James' Cathedral-Basilica. All Knights are invited to join with their Brother Knights from the New York City area in attending these two great testimonies of our Catholic Faith.
The Fourth Degree will be conducted on Saturday, March 30, beginning with Mass at St. Helen's Church (Howard Beach), followed by a ceremony and reception at Russo's On The Bay. All Third Degree Knights are encouraged to consider committing to this final degree.
Preliminary discussion was begun on hosting a Parish Breakfast on one of the Sundays of Lent.
As per the October meeting...
The council Recruitment Drive of September 29 - 30 put us into contact with a number of candidates for membership. Our thanks to them, and our thanks to those Knights who assisted at the Drive.
The Officer Installation ceremony will be conducted in conjunction with Cafiero Council No. 7236 on Saturday, October 13, after the 5pm Mass at Our Lady of Grace R.C. Church. Our thanks to Cafiero Council for inviting us to join them in this event.
The Second Degree will be held on Wednesday, October 17, at St. Finbar Council No. 15728. We have three brother Knights seeking the Second Degree. All other Knights are invited to attend in support.
Efforts are underway to begin the process of the Council's assumption of responsibility for the Christmas Wreath Sale. The Christmas Wreath Sale will be held on December 1 & 2.
Also on December 2, the Council will be sponsoring the Blood Drive.
All Knights are asked to turn in their C & B Raffle books by the November meeting (November 14).
As per the September meeting...
The council will be conducting a Recruitment Drive at St. Brendan's at the 5pm and 7pm Masses on Saturday, September 29, and the 9am and 11am Masses on Sunday, September 30.
We hope to have our formal Officer Installation ceremony sometime in October. Further information as it becomes available.
Looking further ahead, during the Advent and Christmas seasons, the council will be taking on the responsibility of coordinating the Giving Trees effort, as well as the Christmas Wreath sale.
