Developing Large, collaborative Environments For Scientific Communities
Sage2 is a software which enables collaboration in large display environments. In scientific collaborations, when researchers come together to collaborate and they need to reference powerpoints, images, visualizations, pdfs, webpages and other kinds of content. Sage2 is designed to enable collaborative work involving many views. Many users can simultaneously share content and interact with the display, using personal devices. Content can be freely arranged, allowing users to group and cluster content around tasks or other conceptual schemas.
This project involves many researchers and student developers, both at the Electronic Visualization Laboratory and at the Laboratory for Advanced Visualization and Applications. I have contributed to this project in several ways. First, before development, I observed how a team of researchers used the prior version of this technology, SAGE. This early version shared features with Sage2, but was not built using web-based tools and had different features. I documented scientific use cases, as well as roadblocks to usage, and we used these cases to motivate the development of sage2, which we describe in more detail in the publication below. Second, I have contributed research prototype branches to the sage2 code-base, focusing on information visualization, multi-modal speech+gesture interaction and interaction over many related views.
