I show how I created this image in iColorama-S on the iPhone.
I started with this acrylic painting of mine. You could start with any photo or portrait.
I used Brush/Paint and selected the blue background color. I painted over the background to remove detail. This will help to simplify the results of the following “pixel” steps.
I used Preset 8 under Effect/Pixels to create an interesting head. I experimented with several presets, and tried several slider settings under Settings.
After applying the pixels step, I saved the image to my camera roll. Then with the image still open, I used Brush/Paint and selected the blue background color, and with a large brush, I painted over the entire image to make a solid color image. Then I used Effect/Blend to blend the previously saved image onto the solid blue image. I used my fingers to shrink the image and place it where I wanted it.
I used Brush/Paint, selected one of the colors from the image, and painted a simple shape.
Still in Brush/Paint, I changed the settings to select a small brush size and setting the size variation to its maximum setting. I selected another color from the image, and painted a line.
Still in Brush/Paint, I increased the brush size and continued painting.
I used Preset 8 in Effect/Pixels, and painted a brush mask over the upper part of the image, so that the pixels effect would apply only to the “garment.” After I applied the effect, I removed the brush mask. Then in Brush/Paint, I selected the blue background color and painted away some of the “garment.”
Still in Brush/Paint, I used a small black brush and increased the size variation under Settings, and I painted cross hatches to represent eyes.
I used Style/Flat 2 Preset 3 at low opacity, and adjusted the Threshold and Radius settings. I selected a swatch to alter the colors.
I used Tone/Enhance to further alter the colors. Then I used Effect/Glow to give a little depth to the image and to smooth out the highlights.
I sometimes try blending an image with itself with a small rotation and/or offset. Here I used the Phoenix blending mode at medium opacity, and with a small rotation. I always try the BlendIf slider.
I used Brush/Paint and selected the lighter background color, and painted away some of the darker blue background color as well as some of the “garment.”
I used Style/Water to soften the image a bit. I used Preset 16 at low opacity.
I used Brush/Paint with a small brush size and the maximum size variation, and I painted a few curves.
