Sipping Juice

I started with a photograph of these cute little girls, that I then repainted in Sketches Pro, including completely reinventing the background, and then edited in iColorama.

This is the original photo from the Sktchy app. I love the little girls, their matching hair and hats, and the idea of the girl in the lemon print dress sipping lemonade and the girl in the orange print dress sipping orangeade. This was a very small file, so I upsized it twice in BigPhoto.

I opened the photo in the Sketches Pro app, over a blank white layer. Then I created a new layer and I painted over the background, using the fat brush.

On a new layer in Normal blend mode, I drew outlines with a black pen. I reduced the layer opacity of the other layers to better see what I was doing.

I created another new layer in Multiply blend mode, and painted in the figures using a watercolor brush.

I adjusted the layer opacities.

I painted in the fence, the flowers, and the grasses on another new layer. I saved to the camera roll.

I opened the image in iColorama. I applied Adjust/Tonelab preset 4 low opacity, for depth.

I applied one of the Style/Water presets at medium opacity, to smooth the image somewhat.

I used Adjust/Channels to tweak the color.

I used Preset/Border preset 2 at low opacity for a slight vignetting effect.

Now I opened the image in Metabrush. I used a butterfly brush in Brushes/Paint mode, and I used a black and white image as brush source. Rather than make a continuous brush stroke, I created each butterfly separately by just tapping the canvas, changing the size and rotation each time.

I opened the image again in iColorama, and added highlights using Adjust/Exposure and an inverted brush mask to paint the effect in only the areas I wanted it, such as the faces.

I like this image so far, but I feel like there are too many colors, which makes it feel rather busy. So I used Tone/Enhance and Adjust/Levels to change the color and lightness of the flowers, to be closer to the other colors in the image. I used an inverted brush mask to paint in the effect only on the flowers.

I wanted to adjust the dark color of the grass on the left to match the tone on the right. So I used Effect/Blend and blended an earlier version of the image (before I added the flowers) on top of the current version, and I shifted it to the right, and used an inverted brush mask to paint in the lighter tone in that area. I adjusted the opacity as needed for the best color match.

I used Tone/Tint at low opacity, with an inverted brush mask, to paint in a light sky in a color close to those already in the image.

As a finishing touch, I applied Effect/Raise preset 2 with low size to emphasize the lines.

I thought I was done, but the deep greens still make the image feel busy: too many colors. So I used Adjust/Channels preset 5 at medium opacity, experimenting with all the sliders, to soften the color of the background. I used a brush mask to protect the figures.

Keeping the brush mask in place, I used Tone/Sepia at low opacity to further desaturate the background.

Inverting the brush mask, I then used Adjust/Levels to increase the lightness and contrast of the girls.

The orange juice bottle is too red. So I used Adjust/Hue and Tone/Sepia, both at low opacity, and used an inverted brush mask to paint the effect onto the just the juice bottle. I'm finally done!
