Being a successful child care provider is no easy work. There are good days like when your charge takes a two hour nap and behaves like the angel you know and love. Then, there are days when your mischievous rugrat puts playdough in the hood of your jacket, and you find it once you’re home.
I’ve decided to create a blog that is based on funny moments I’ve experienced with children, throughout the years. I would like to pass on what I’ve learned to fellow nannies who are going through the same situations I’ve been in. For example, I’ll share how to get out slime, and how I found out glitter really is the lice of the craft world. I’ll teach you that youtube can be educational or using a creative method to get your child to eat all the food on their plate. Come all nannies, teachers, moms, and read the tales of the Nanny Journal!
I wake up in the morning
To the sound of an engine above my head.
Puppy licks come next.
Thanks, Cat!
Prepare to make breakfast twice.
Cat will still steal it
No matter how high.
Time to go to work.
Hope I make it on time.
Thanks, Cat!
Dog jumps for joy
When thrown a toy.
Cat escapes out the door
With no fear of the world.
See you later, Cat!
Time to go home.
Cat is waiting at the door
Scaring the neighbors,
Always taking it too far.
Thanks, Cat!
Dog greets me.
He’s thankful I’m home.
Ball in mouth,
Ready for me to throw.
But the cat keeps scratching at my toes.
Thanks, Cat!
Door opens.
Daddy’s home.
Cat runs to greet,
Purring at his feet.
No scratching at Daddy,
Only me.
Thanks, Cat!
Time for bed.
Dog under sheets
And Cat above our heads.
Soft sound of engine
Starts to begin.
I fall asleep
Knowing Cat will wake me
Out of my dreams.
Thanks, Cat!

As a nanny, it is important to use various mediums for children because it promotes free expression for developing personalities. Free art reflects children’s independence. It’s giving them the freedom to be in control. Personally, I get bored when my children and I only use crayons throughout the day. To keep the day running smoothly, I plan activities that keep children entertained. However, on this particular day, I didn’t have an idea planned. I decided to take a walk on the wild side and chose to work with glitter.
Honestly, I love sparkly things as much as a child does. That was until I realized it was the lice of the craft world. The craft started off great! It was simple and only included glue, glitter and construction paper. Jess, who was four at the time, had her own bottle of glue that she squeezed all over the paper. The glitter part came next. I knew allowing this much independence was a risk, but with supervision, I thought my girl wouldn’t make much of a mess.
I was wrong. It was time to shake the glitter onto the glue. Next thing I knew, Nova missed the paper and the glitter landed on the floor. It made me chuckle, because I knew it was just a matter of time before the glitter ended up somewhere other than the paper. I should have stopped myself from laughing, because she did it again. This time, she threw the glitter on purpose. That’s when I used my nanny voice and told her glitter is to decorate paper and not the house. I suggested we finish with glitter on the floor thinking that Jess’s aim for the paper would be better.
Instead of her aim being better, she discovered if she moved her hand on top of the previous glitter spilled on the floor, it was like making snow angels. Before I knew it, this girl start flaring her arms on the wooden floor screaming about glitter angels! I remember thinking I would be able to sweep it up. Note: This is not possible. The glitter stuck to her clothes so the whole house ended up getting glitter bombed. I finally came to my senses and ended the bombing.
Nova and I started to clean up the glitter but shortly after, I realized we weren’t even making a dent. I then sent a well thought out text to Jess’s mother explaining what happened. I remember mentioning we were having too much fun and got carried away. At this point, I was hopeful that because Jess and I always had fun, her mom might forgive me. It was my only hope. Hours passed and the glitter was still everywhere.
Let’s just say, the next day, I used multiple lint rollers around the house picking up the glitter. It actually worked really well. Nannies, if glitter gets you too, use a lint roller to clean it up BEFORE parents get home.
