The home environment can serve as the child’s primary teacher before they enter school. Even after children begin their formal educational program, they continue to learn a great deal from the home. This is especially true when it comes to values and attitude. Therefore, parents, become a model for their child’s attitude toward work. In order for children to become successful and contributing workers in society, they need to develop the following attitude toward the world of work:
Homework becomes an extension of the school day and is used to determine a student’s work habits grade as well as academic grades. The purpose of homework is to provide the student with the opportunity to practice newly acquired skills and reinforce those skills previously learned. It is the student’s responsibility to know the assignment, bring home the proper material, complete and return the assignment on time. Teachers are encouraged to monitor the amount of homework assigned and to assign it on a daily basis. To help your child be successful;
The school can assume NO responsibility for any personal property of students. Therefore, radios, tape recorders, excess money, toys, etc. should not be brought to school. Personal items that interfere with the learning process will be confiscated and a parent may retrieve them at the close of the school year. Coats, hats, sweaters, etc. should be clearly marked in order to facilitate return to the rightful owner. All articles found will be kept for a limited amount of time. If items are lost, the student should notify the school at the time of the loss.
TEXTBOOK RESPONSIBILITY
Textbooks are provided on a free loan basis. They are expensive and must be used for several years. Parents are financially responsible for lost and/or damaged textbooks and other materials of instruction assigned to the student. Board of Education policy dictates that no student may advance to the next grade with outstanding debts. All textbooks are to be covered throughout the school year to minimize wear-and-tear.
DISCIPLINE
The staff of Rogers Heights Elementary works with children in a positive manner to maintain order and discipline at all times. Our discipline policies are based on consideration of others and the safety of children. Our ultimate goal is to move from imposed consequences to self-managed, responsible decision-making. The Prince George’s County Public Schools Code of Student Conduct may be viewed atwww.pgcps.org. The code makes it very clear that the following behaviors interfere with teaching and learning, are not acceptable, and students can expect suspension and/or expulsion for them:
Parents are encouraged to provide as much support as possible in this area. It is extremely important for students to realize that school personnel and parents are working cooperatively.
