WWII Evacuees EXPERIENCE AS PART OF OUR HOOKE COURT THREE DAY RESIDENTIAL

Year Four experienced first hand what it was like for children during WWII to be evacuated to rural areas of Britain and enjoyed a Celebratory VE Day Party during our residential visit to Hooke Court.

Wartime Cooking - 1/4 day

We learnt about the scarcity of food and rationing. We used recipes from the war to prepare food to eat.

Wartime Drills  – 1/4 day

We worked with the air raid wardens and fire fighters to practice drills such as using the stirrup pump to put out fires as well as making incendiary bombs safe. We sheltered from an air raid in our very own Anderson Shelter.

The Schoolroom for Evacuees – 1/4 day

We learnt what it was like to go to school during the war and write letters home with a dip pen and ink to reassure our parents that all is well. We handled real money from the period and attended an arithmetic lesson where we added and subtracted £ s d!

VE Day Party and Games - Evening

We celebrated the end of the war in Europe by enjoying a meal from the period listening to Winston Churchill and the music of Glen Miller. We celebrated the 75th Anniversary of VE Day playing some favourite party games of the era.
