Ancient Egypt is one of the world's first and most famous civilizations. About five-thousand years ago, the Egyptian civilization began along the Nile River in what is today northern Africa. Using the Nile's yearly floods to water crops, Egyptians built a large and successful empire known for its massive pyramids, mysterious mummies, and powerful pharaohs.

The Egyptians believed in an afterlife. They wanted their bodies to arrive in that afterlife with them. So, after someone's death, they wrapped their body and made it into a mummy to preserve it.
