In 1620, about 1,000 people left England for the new land in America looking for a place to practice their religion freely. They became known as Pilgrims. The king thought he was in charge of them; the colonists had other ideas. Eventually, tensions between those loyal to the crown and those wanting independence led Massachusetts to play an important in the American Revolution.
Who were the Pilgrims?
How did they establish a government?
Why did they seek independence? And how were they able to win it?
In 1620, a ship called Mayflower set sail from England and accidentally landed near Massachusetts. The newcomers began to argue about who was in charge. To stop the fighting, leaders wrote the Mayflower Compact.

In 1620, about one hundred Pilgrims set sail aboard a ship called Mayflower hoping to simplify the Church of England. After landing in Plymouth, Massachusetts, they learned that survival would depend on making friends with the local tribes.

What kind of relationship did they have with the local tribes?

The Wampanoag Native Americans lived in what is now Massachusetts when the Pilgrims landed there in 1620. Though they first tried to form a friendship with the newcomers, tensions rose. This led to a violent war which had devastating consequences for this group.

In the fall of 1621, the Pokanoket Wampanoag and the Pilgrims gathered for a feast to give thanks. However, peace between the two groups didn’t last long.
