The mission of Adult Basic Education in Minnesota is to provide adults with educational opportunities

to acquire and improve academic skills necessary to effectively participate as

productive workers, family members, and citizens.

How Can We Support Your Goals? ABE enrollment has begun and will continue throughout the school year. (*See enrollment information about our “CLC/ABE Partnership Classes”, below.) ABE classes are offered for adult learners with academic goals: GED or Accuplacer Preparation, Work Readiness, Basic Computer, and English as a Second Language. Distance Learning access is available to support progress in addition to class attendance.

GED Preparation Classes:

The GED Test content includes: Reasoning Through the Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and Social Studies.

Flexible scheduling promote attendance and goal progress.

Work at your own pace with individualized instruction.

Accommodations are made for GED Testing candidates who have diagnosed physical, mental, sensory, or learning disabilities and can provide appropriate documentation from a qualified professional of their impairment and its effect on their ability to take the GED Tests under standard conditions.

Work Readiness:

Prepare for employment or promotions by improving your academic and computer skills. Earning a National Career Readiness Certificate helps job seekers verify skill levels, certify job readiness, and improve employment prospects. The NCRC exam includes: Reading for Information, Locating Information, and Applied Mathematics.

College Readiness:

Strengthen your reading and math skills to prepare (or improve scores) for Accuplacer testing. These classes can build your confidence as you prepare to transition into college-level programs. No CLC credits are awarded. No tuition fees or book costs.

CLC students can register at for the Adult Education Math class. CLC students with Accuplacer Reading goals enroll directly with Brainerd ABE (Rm C105).

All other students enroll in College Readiness classes (Reading and/or Math), C105.

Digital Literacy Skills:

Adult learners improve basic computer skills along with other core content goals.

Earn a Northstar Digital Literacy Certificate to verify computer skills to prospective employers and build confidence. Brainerd ABE is a Northstar Proctor Site. For more information:

Brushing Up the Basics:

Improve basic skills in math, life skills reading, and writing. All students work at their own level…at their own pace.

English Language Learners

If English is your second language, we offer classes for you to practice speaking, writing, and reading English. Please call for an enrollment appointment, 218-855-8166.

ABE/CLC Partnership Classes

ABE Integrated Instruction and support is offered within one section of Developmental Education Math 0800 and one section of Read 0591. These partnership classes are for CLC students only and follow CLC’s semester schedule. Please check with your advisor for guidance.

How To Get Started…In order to best support your learning, we need to know your starting point. All ABE students take an assessment to determine their entry level skills. This assessment, the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) is required for ABE enrollment. No prior preparation is necessary to take the TABE. ESL students will take a CASAS assessment. (Please call us to schedule your CASAS test appointment.)

Brainerd ABE Fall enrollment starts on August 14th. Classes will start on September 5th.
