Providing timely and meaningful feedback to students is a major goal for online learning because it helps students reflect on their strengths and weaknesses, and it helps them set learning goals for the future.
The D2L Assignment tool provides many ways for instructors to provide feedback. Begin by going to the D2L Assignments area, then click on the title of an Assignment you would like to grade.
Once you click the assignment title, you will see assignment submissions for each student.
Enter the D2L grading area by clicking the student's name, the title of the document, or the "evaluate" link on the right.
D2L has two versions of the assignment tool. The grading area looks similar for both the original version (on the left) and the new version (on the right). If the student has submitted more than one document, you may need to click on the title of the document to view it within the D2L grading area.
Click on the title of the document the student has submitted (on the top left) to view it within the D2L grading area.
Select one of the on-screen commenting tools (above the document), and use these tools to draw or add comments on the document.
On the right, assign a score, and add overall comments in the "Feedback" box. For more detailed feedback, consider writing your comments in a separate document, and use the "Add Attachment" link to upload the file.
When finished, click "Publish."
In order to grade an assignment with a rubric, you will first need to create the rubric in the D2L Rubric area and attach the rubric to the D2L Assignment Editor.
To grade with a rubric, click the title of the rubric on the right, then select the appropriate box for each row to assign points.
Select the pencil icon on the right to add comments. The rubric may also have a space for comments at the bottom.
The score will be populated automatically (if the rubric uses points). You can also assign a score manually.
Add comments in the "Feedback" box, and click "Publish" when finished.
Click the "Download" button (on the top right of the document preview area) to download the student's document to your computer or flash drive.
Then, open the document in Microsoft Word, a PDF reader, or another computer program, and add comments to the document using that program.
Save the document, and upload it to the D2L grading area using the "Add Attachment" link.
Assign a score, add comments in the "Feedback" box (perhaps a note to look at the attached document), and click "Publish" when finished.
You can provide feedback using video.
Click the "Record Video" link on the bottom right, then click "New Recording" to record your message. Follow the on-screen instructions, and click "Add" when done.
Video can be a useful tool for capturing your tone of voice when providing feedback.
Assign a score, add comments in the "Feedback" box (perhaps a note to look at the video), and click "Publish" when finished.
Turnitin has its own set of commenting tools in the "Feedback Studio" that can be used to provide comments and generate a score. In order to use the Turnitin Feedback Studio, you will first need to enable the Turnitin "Grademark" tool in the D2L Assignment Editor.
To go to the Turnitin Feedback Studio, click on the pencil icon in the assignment submission area, or click the link to "Launch Turnitin" (on the top right) within the grading area.
Within the Feedback Studio, select one of the on-screen commenting tools.
Highlight an area of text, right-click to select a commenting tool, and add a comment. You can also tag text as an error using the tags on the right.
The Feedback Studio can generate a score, or you can assign a score manually in the D2L grading area.
Add a comment in the "Feedback" box, and click "Publish" when done.
