The D2L Blog provides a space for students and instructors to explore and share ideas. The blog can be set to private and used as a personal writing space, or it can be set to public and shared with anyone in the course and on the PSC D2L platform. Blog entries can incorporate images and videos, and students and instructors can "watch" (or follow) blogs and comment on them.
This page describes how to create and find blog entries. Instructions can also be found on this D2L Video Tutorial. See also this article on Teaching with Blogs from Vanderbilt's Center for Teaching for ideas on how to incorporate blogs into a course.
Get started by navigating to the Blog area:
Click on the Communication tab in the course navigation bar.
Then select Blog.
The Blog area has three sections:
My Blog - Space to create, view, and edit your blog posts.
Blog Watch - Space to read public blogs you follow.
Blog List - Space to find and read all available public blogs.
Create a blog post by going into the "My Blog" area of the D2L Blog, then click the blue "New Entry" button.
Assign a title for the blog post.
Type the content of the blog post in the Content box. The Content box contains a Rich Text Editor which allows writers to insert videos, images, and links and format font and text styles.
In the Properties section at the bottom:
Add a checkmark to "Make entry public" to make the blog post public, or leave the box blank to keep it private. "Public" means the post can be viewed by anyone on the PSC D2L platform, while "Private" means the post can be viewed only by the writer.
Add a checkmark to "Allow comments" to allow readers to comment on the blog post. (This is similar to a reply in a D2L Discussion or a comment on a social media post.)
Instructors cannot view the private posts of their students. Students have to make the blog post public in order to share it with classmates and instructors.
Blog posts display at the bottom of the My Blog area.
Click the tab for "All Entries" at the top to view all blog posts you have created, or click "Public Entries" or "Private Entries" to view only public or private posts.
Click on the down-arrow next to the title of the blog post to view or edit the blog post, or simply click the title of the blog post to read it.
Find blog posts to read by going into the "Blog List" area of the D2L Blog.
(Remember that you can read only "public" blogs. Instructors cannot read the private blog posts of students in their course.)
Search for a specific writer, or scroll down to view all public blog posts.
Click on the name of the writer whose blog you want to read.
The writer's blog posts will display at the bottom.
Click on the title of the blog post to read the full blog post and comments made by other readers.
A blog post displays the following sections:
title and date of the blog entry
an option to "follow" the blog writer
the text of the blog post
a button to add a comment or response
comments made by other readers
Subscribe (follow) someone's blog when you read one of their blog posts.
From the blog post, click the box to "Add [Writer] to your Blog Watch." This box is found below the title of the blog post.
You can also subscribe (follow) someone's blog when you click on the writer's name in the "Blog List" area.
Click the down-arrow next to the writer's name and select "Add [Writer] to you Blog Watch" to follow the writer.
Blog writers you follow will appear in the "Blog Watch" area of the D2L Blog.
The D2L Blog can provide a private a writing space and a platform to share ideas with others. Blog entries can incorporate images and videos, and readers can follow and comment on blogs as well.
