SUMMER SUN CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
AM Classes
Art Studio: Come explore the visual arts and learn to use a variety of media to create. We will work on our drawing with pencil and charcoal, render images in paint, play with digital arts, and construct with everything from clay to cardboard! (with Manda)
Basketball: Practice your favorite sport, learn the basics, and enjoy being part of a team as we build our basketball skills. This is an inclusive class for all, from those who are just learning to play to those who have played for years. (with Craig & Saugat)
Comics Drawing: Do you love to draw? Love to read comics or manga? This class will provide lots of great examples and help you develop your own style. Work on your characters and plot, or dive in to create your own comics zine. (with Manda)
Cooking: Learn the basics of cooking with easy-to-find ingredients, try delicious dishes from around the world, and develop food preparation skills that will feed you for a lifetime! (with Sage & Michelle)
Creative Expression: Consider all of the unique elements that make YOU such a valuable part of your community. In this class we will explore self reflection as a creative act that helps us become empowered contributors to our schools and communities. We will work on craft and art based projects, build teamwork skills, and consider activities that could benefit those around us. (with Fartun & Christi)
Explore DIY Summer Crafts: Do-it-yourself! We'll explore a variety of crafts that take your creativity to the next level. Try out fun projects like glass painting, hand knitting, candle making, cardboard construction, tie-dye, button making, zine-writing, slime making, and embroidery. (with Fartun & Christi)
Fiber Arts: Sew a stuffy, learn to crochet, macrame a plant hanger, design your own fabric. Texture and color will guide us as we create with fabrics and fibers. (With Fartun & Sage)
Painting: In this class we will explore a variety of approaches to painting including acrylics, watercolors, painting on canvas, painting from nature, painting tutorials, and more! (with Manda)
Sports Skills: Calling all athletes! Come train up and get ready to go out for the team! This is an inclusive conditioning and skill building class that will focus on growing students' abilities in a variety of sports. Join us for basketball, soccer, flag football, volleyball, games, and more! (with Craig & Saugat)
Stomp N Shake Cheer: In the style of the McDaniel High School's Stomp & Shake Cheer Team, this class will learn classic cheers and routines from HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges & Universities). Come get coordinated, be part of an energetic group, enjoy rhythmic dances and chants, and develop skills that will help you celebrate your culture, your school, and yourself! (with Leslie & Michelle)
Volleyball: Learn the basics of this sport just in time to try out for the team this fall! We'll work on passing, setting, spiking, serving, and the roles that make up a solid team. (with Craig & Christi)
Walking Field Trips: Start your day off with adventure! This class will explore nearby neighborhood areas and parks on walking field trips. Try your hand at photography and drawing to document the sights we'll see, and enjoy scavenger hunts that challenge you to see it all. (with SUN instructors)
PM Classes
Tabletop Roleplaying Games: Learn how to play popular tabletop roleplaying games of dice, fantastical characters, surprising missions, and teamwork! Students will learn the basics of Dungeons & Dragons campaign play as well as create worlds and adventure through D&D-inspired crafts and live-action role playing (LARPing) activities. (with Manda)
*The Following Classes are Drop-in/Rotation Style.
*GameZone: Uno! Come play fun group and board games, practice your chess moves, challenge your friends in ping pong, and take turns playing Nintendo Switch, Wii, and other video game consoles in a relaxed environment.
*Makerspace: Fuse beads, glass painting, shrinky dinks, printmaking, cardboard construction, jewelry making, nail art . . . the list is endless for all you can create in our Makerspace.
*Open Gym & Group Games: Break a sweat, develop skills, and play your favorites! This is an inclusive space for students to come ball with friends, be a team player, and keep moving this summer.
