Warm Up
https://mathathome.mathlearningcenter.org/
Why? Explain your thinking.
What reason might you choose the other option?
Investigate: How can I make an object on the floor go the farthest?
Talk about:
If you want to make an object move, what do you need to do?
If you want to make it move farther, what can you do differently?
How far will an object go if you give it a small push?
How far will it go if you give it a hard push?
Try pushing different objects with the same amount of push. Do they all go the same distance? If you push the same object on a different surface (a wood floor, carpeted floor, sidewalk, or grass), how does it move differently? If you want the same object to go the same distance on two different surfaces, what do you have to do differently?
Talk about:
What patterns did you observe?
What new questions do you have?
Challenge: Can some objects move with no help from humans? How do they move? What is moving them?
Today we’re going to have fun exploring movement with bean bags. If you're learning at home, you can make 'sock balls' to use in place of bean bags (simply use two or three pairs of large socks rolled inside each other to form a ball).
With bean bag balancing on head, shoulders, or back:
Balance on one foot. Shift to balance on the other foot.
Sit and then stand again. If the beanbag falls, try again.
In plank position, slowly slide your feet around in a circle.
Slow and Fast
Use your foot to slowly slide the bean bag around the activity area.
Slide the bean bag on the ground, back and forth from hand to hand. How fast can you make the bean bag slide while keeping it under control?
Target Practice
Each student finds a spot on the wall as a target (e.g., a brick, piece of paper, etc.) Toss the bean bag underhand to:
Hit the center of the target.
Hit the edges of the target.
Hit just above (below, to the sides) of the target.
Partner Fun
Using 1 beanbag per pair:
Toss and catch the bean bag.
Slide it back and forth on the ground.
Pass it back and forth like a soccer ball, using your feet.
Try all of the above using 2 bean bags
