Vision Screening

  • The Department of Education recommends periodic vision screening to identify students who may have a vision defect. Untreated vision deficits may impact a student's ability to learn. Vision screening for distance acuity is performed for 7th grade students unless the parent or guardian opts out of the screening. There are a few exceptions when students will not be screened, but instead be directly referred to an eye specialist for a comprehensive exam. Other students who will not be screened at school include those who have received a comprehensive eye exam from an eye care provider within the previous 12 months.

  • If a student fails the vision screening, their parent/guardian will be notified and provided with a referral form to bring to their health care provider or eye specialist.

  • Please remember, vision screenings at school are a tool used to attempt to identify students who may need follow up care from their health provider or eye specialist. The screenings are not comprehensive and are not a substitute for an eye exam preformed by an eye doctor.

  • If you would like to opt out of routine screening during the 7th grade year, please notify the school nurse in writing.
