Vision Screening
The Department of Education recommends periodic vision screening to identify students who may have a vision defect. Untreated vision deficits may impact a student's ability to learn. Vision screening for distance acuity is performed for 7th grade students unless the parent or guardian opts out of the screening. There are a few exceptions when students will not be screened, but instead be directly referred to an eye specialist for a comprehensive exam. Other students who will not be screened at school include those who have received a comprehensive eye exam from an eye care provider within the previous 12 months.
If a student fails the vision screening, their parent/guardian will be notified and provided with a referral form to bring to their health care provider or eye specialist.
Please remember, vision screenings at school are a tool used to attempt to identify students who may need follow up care from their health provider or eye specialist. The screenings are not comprehensive and are not a substitute for an eye exam preformed by an eye doctor.
If you would like to opt out of routine screening during the 7th grade year, please notify the school nurse in writing.
