LAST WEEK
It was lovely to welcome back the trainees on Friday and we began the year pretty hard and fast introducing their next and final academic module.
I am sure they have discussed this with you in their PDR meetings this week, but their next piece of work is an Action Research Project. They will be carrying out some research with their learners with the aim of improving progress in a subject related issue. They had some beginnings of ideas on Friday, but I have encouraged them to come and speak with you about things they might choose to look at. The key here is SUBJECT SPECIFICITY. This is not jus changing teaching and learning, it needs to have a clear link to subject. This could, however, be more implicit than explicit such as writing in an exam as the subject is Psychology and the need to create a PEEL paragraph within a certain time is important etc.
We have looked at the phases of action research which you can see here https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fhu0K--4zmgGI2PL3sHOpQkdI6rHk1l3mlD8HAUmz1k/edit?usp=sharing
MOVING FORWARD
Trainees have their presentation deadline on Monday 20th January, and this is probably their main focus right now, except for those that completed this over Christmas or even before in some cases! They do have a self directed study day this Friday to ease some of that pressure.
Friday 24th January they have their school placement day where they will be going to observe in a local school to see the transition through secondary school, consider the teaching styles and behaviour management in school, and as much as possible see how their subject is delivered.
Friday 31st January we will be reflecting on this visit and then working more in a workshop setting on thier portfolio and their action research proposals and thics forms.
Please find here details of the next online training sessions for your diaries https://docs.google.com/document/d/13BjmtVEAB3Kh-CUJlrXArICLvzwMXiICWE7bfr9maZQ/edit?usp=sharing. The next sessions are on Subject Specific Pedagogy and so are split into groups beginning the week commencing 13th January.
It is also time for you to complete your first Subject Mentor Review. I have linked this here and to the right. Please can you make a copy and email this to jo.elliott@port.ac.uk and your trainee by 31st January please.
Further details on how to complete this document can be found here https://sites.google.com/port.ac.uk/uop-fhss-pgce-mic/further-education/core-mentor-training. If you have any problems, please contact me ASAP.
They should have completed their peer observation on a peer in their class and their Professional Behaviour formal observation with you before Christmas, as below.
Now focus turns to Adaptive Teaching Peer Observations and their first Behaviour Management formal observation, as below.
Trainees should be teaching around 8 hours per week
Trainees should be in a classroom observing teaching for around 4 hours in Jan as below
Please recheck the guidance sent at the beginning of the course regarding this. The picture below shows where we are in that initial topic plan/scheme. The green lines are Christmas Break and the yellow is February half term.
Usually after Christmas, pre-service trainees begin to run whole units/modules on their own, being in charge of introducing the new unit, preparing the scheme and lesson materials, and completing the assessment and marking. They also should be in a position to be left unattended without concern. If this is not the case, please let me know ASAP.
The whole Mentor Scheme can be found here for your convenience
Please keep meeting weekly working through the PDR and email if you have any questions or concerns.
