The last few weeks, behaviour management has been a focus of our taught sessions for two reasons:
Trainees are currently working on a narrated presentation that looks at the impact of implementing a new digital teaching strategy with students and they need to analyse students behaviour, what might be impacting this behaviour, and their own behaviour management strategies.
Some trainees are having some behaviour management issues at present which they were in need of some support with in preparation for their 3 behaviour obs which are upcoming - Professional Behaviour, and then Behaviour Management 1 and 2.
We have looked at voice skills, stretch and challenge for all learners, using assessment to inform planning, fun and engaging teaching and learning methods, and some of the socioeconomic, demographic, and familial factors that can impact behaviour in the classroom.
Do speak with your trainees about what they have learnt from these sessions and help to apply the learning to their placements.
To help you support the trainees in their studies, it is vital that you are also supported with communication and training.
Please find here an updated page of the core training videos for mentors availiable here https://sites.google.com/port.ac.uk/uop-fhss-pgce-mic/further-education/core-mentor-training. These are to support those who were not able to attend a face to face training session, but also useful for those that might like a refresher as the training can be intense. I have broken the training down into a series of videos so that you can watch all if you have completed no training, but then can do it to the bits you feel as most pertinent during the year.
Please ensure that you have completed the two google form registers after completing the training to ensure you are recorded as compliant. The form links are on the website.
Please find here details of the next online training sessions for your diaries https://docs.google.com/document/d/13BjmtVEAB3Kh-CUJlrXArICLvzwMXiICWE7bfr9maZQ/edit?usp=sharing. The next sessions are on Subject Specific Pedagogy and so are split into groups beginning the week commencing 13th January.
They should have completed their peer observation on a peer in their class and their Professional Behaviour formal observation with you by the end of this week, as below.
When we return after the break, focus turns to Adaptive Teaching Peer Observations and their first Behaviour Management formal observation, as below.
Trainees should be teaching around 6 hours per week moving up to 8 hours after the break (shown in green below)
Trainees should be in a classroom observing teaching for around 8 hours per week lowering to 4 hours in Jan as below
Please recheck the guidance sent at the beginning of the course regarding this. The picture below shows where we are in that initial topic plan/scheme. The green lines are Christmas Break and the yellow is February half term.
Usually after Christmas, pre-service trainees begin to run whole units/modules on their own, being in charge of introducing the new unit, preparing the scheme and lesson materials, and completing the assessment and marking. They also should be in a position to be left unattended without concern. If this is not the case, please let me know ASAP.
The whole Mentor Scheme can be found here for your convenience
Please keep meeting weekly working through the PDR and email if you have any questions or concerns.
