The One-Day National Workshop on Ocean Energy & Water for Sustainable Future: Potential and Challenges 2026 (OEWSF-2026) is organized by the Department of Green Energy Technology under the UNESCO Chair on Renewable and Clean Energy for Sustainable Development at Pondicherry University, in collaboration with the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai. This high-impact event brings together leading scientists, academicians, industry experts, and policymakers to explore marine renewable energy, desalination, infrastructure resilience, and sustainability pathways. The workshop aims to accelerate India’s ocean energy roadmap through knowledge exchange, technological insights, and strategic dialogue toward sustainable coastal and marine development.

Pondicherry University

The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), established in November 1993 as an autonomous society under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, is governed by a Council with the Director as its head. Its primary objective is to develop reliable indigenous technologies to address engineering challenges in harvesting both living and non-living resources within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), which spans nearly two-thirds of the country’s land area. With a mission to create world-class solutions for sustainable ocean resource utilization, NIOT engages in renewable ocean energy, desalination, deep-sea mineral exploration, acoustic systems, autonomous observation tools, and marine biotechnology. Additionally, it contributes to coastal restoration, tsunami monitoring, and research ship operations, thereby enhancing India’s capabilities and leadership in ocean science, engineering, and environmental stewardship.
Under UNESCO Chair - RCESD Activity
The UNESCO Chair on Renewable and Clean Energy for Sustainable Development (RCESD) at Pondicherry University (2024–2028) serves as a global academic platform dedicated to advancing research, innovation, and capacity building in sustainable energy technologies.
Established in collaboration with UNESCO and supported by MSF/SAF–India, the Chair promotes interdisciplinary research in solar, wind, hydrogen, bioenergy, energy storage, and emerging low-carbon systems. It fosters international collaboration, industry engagement, and policy dialogue to accelerate the transition toward net-zero energy pathways. By integrating education, research, and outreach, the UNESCO Chair–RCESD contributes to Sustainable Development by Affordable and Clean Energy and broader climate action initiatives.
Department of Green Energy Technology(DGET)
The Department of Green Energy Technology (DGET) at Pondicherry University began as the Centre for Green Energy Technology in 2010, under the UMSGET, with the goal of building expertise in renewable and clean energy. It gained recognition as a Centre of Excellence and received funding from the MNRE (Ministry of New and Renewable Energy), India, and the South Asia Foundation (SAF) – Indian chapter. By 2020, it had grown into a University Grants Commission (UGC)-notified department. DGET now offers a B.Tech. in Energy Science and Technology, an M.Tech. in Green Energy Technology, and Ph.D. programs in renewable energy. The department is committed to the continuous advancement of energy technologies through research and product development
UNESCO Madanjeet School of Green Energy Technology (UMSGET)
The UNESCO Madanjeet School of Green Energy Technology (UMSGET) focuses on advancing education and research in sustainable energy technologies. It aims to foster innovation and promote environmentally friendly practices to address global energy challenges. The UNESCO Chair on “Renewable and Clean Energy for Sustainable Development” was established in UMSGET at Pondicherry University (2024-2028) to promote green and clean energy technologies. Collaborating with UNESCO, MSF, and SAF-India, the UNESCO Chair firmly commits to providing intellectual knowledge and professional training to promote renewable energy in South Asia and globally for sustainable development. The UNESCO Chair is to work with governments, schools, colleges, universities, industries, NGOs, businesses, researchers, technology developers and environmentally conscious individuals working towards the promotion/development of renewable energy technologies for sustainable development.
