Fourth graders started the year with the unit “Energy and Forces.” They learned about various types of potential and kinetic energy, including thermal energy, radiant energy, sound energy, chemical energy, and electrical energy. They also worked together to build a battery. Every team was successfully able to light an LED using pennies, washers, paper, vinegar, salt, and water. Since students understand that energy is neither created nor destroyed, ask: “Where did that energy come from?” Fourth graders had an absolute blast making connections (literally and figuratively) as they played with snap circuit kits. Finally, they debated the best way to light up a city with different possible renewable energy sources (wind, sun, and water). “Energy and Forces” leads seamlessly into our next unit, “Weather and Climate.” We have some enthusiastic meteorologists in fourth grade! Looking at weather apps together in the morning before leaving for school is a great way for you to support your child through this unit.
