Rot! It’s a hugely important “R” word in the world of sustainability. Students buried many different materials in three different bins: air, soil without worms, and soil with worms, to discover which items would biodegrade, and how quickly. As we patiently allow decomposition to take its course (or not), we have been exploring the other Rs in meaningful ways. Students took a thrilling and enormously educational trip to Circular Services Recycling Center, where they truly impressed our tour guide with their engagement and Recycling knowledge. Students studied Repair and Reuse when they collected broken crayons and then melted them into lego crayons, and made tote bags out of tee shirts. Third graders have taking Refuse seriously as they make sure to create less landfill waste every Thursday. Why not try “No Throw Away Thursday” at home? Sustainability connects to every science unit, including our new one on water. Water is everything, and this concept is coming to life in the science room as we learn all about how this most miraculous molecule moves through the water cycle.
