After being reintroduced to the science room, first graders kicked off the year with their first choice unit. After researching topics of interest, they narrowed the world of science down to three contenders for study: dogs, teeth, and rocks/minerals/gems. After an exciting vote, rocks/minerals/gems emerged as the winner! Using the magnifying glass skills they acquired last year, first graders were able to examine many rocks up close. These rock samples included obsidian, native sulfur, limestone, granite, marble, sandstone, talc, galena, and magnetite. Students noticed the ways that these rocks were the same, but also different. “Same but different” is a big idea that comes up across many fields - see what connections you can make at home. Because rocks/crystal/gems is our choice unit, we are planning a special field trip to the Hall of Gems and Minerals at the American Museum of Natural History in early December. Stay tuned!
