LESSON SCHEDULES
Melody & Accompaniment Balance:
The melody will likely be played by flutes, clarinet, and alto saxophones. Since the flutes and clarinet are outnumbered by the saxophones, balance is critical. The saxophones may need to back off dynamically to allow the flutes to cut through.
The trumpets may also carry the melody in some sections, and if so, they should ensure a warm, lyrical tone rather than being too brassy.
The trombones and tuba will serve as the harmonic foundation. They should play with smooth, well-supported air to avoid a harsh or choppy sound in sustained notes.
Brass vs. Woodwind Projection:
Trumpets and trombones naturally project more than flutes and clarinet. Be mindful that they don’t overpower the melody.
If the melody is in the trumpets, trombones should ensure their harmony remains supportive and doesn’t overshadow the lead line.
The tuba is the only bass voice, so it must be clear and steady to provide a solid foundation for the group.
Percussion Role (Set Player Only):
With only one percussionist, their role is crucial for maintaining tempo and providing rhythmic support.
The drummer should play lightly with brushes or soft mallets in quieter sections to avoid overpowering the band.
If the arrangement calls for sustained cymbal rolls or soft mallet percussion, consider having the drummer use a ride cymbal with mallets for a gentler effect.
Beauty and the Beast has a gentle, flowing ballad tempo. The drummer must set a steady tempo, especially for slower, rubato sections.
Flutes and clarinet need to ensure they don’t rush through runs or embellishments, which can happen when they play alone.
The alto saxophones, being dominant in number, should carefully match their rhythm to the flutes and clarinet to avoid a muddled sound.
Crescendos and decrescendos should be gradual and natural.
The climax should build smoothly—avoid sudden, jarring increases in volume, especially in the brass section.
Breath control is key for shaping phrases—remind wind players to take staggered breaths to maintain continuity in long passages.
Melodic Expression Tips:
Flutes, clarinet, and saxophones should connect their phrases with smooth air support rather than tonguing too much.
Trumpets should focus on warm tone production rather than sheer volume in lyrical sections.
Legato phrasing is essential. Remind students to think of the melody as one continuous line rather than individual notes.
Trombones should avoid over-articulating notes, as this can make legato sections sound too choppy.
Percussion should ensure soft rolls or light brushwork where necessary to support the band without overpowering it.
The saxophones need to blend carefully with flutes and clarinet, ensuring their tone is round and warm rather than too edgy.
Trombones and tuba should work together to provide a solid foundation—if the tuba is weak, the whole band may lack depth.
If the band lacks horns or oboes, some harmonies may be missing. Encourage strong listening skills so the ensemble remains in tune even if some parts are light.
Balance Check: Have flutes and clarinet play alone, then gradually add the saxophones and brass to ensure the melody isn’t buried.
Brass vs. Woodwind Sectionals: Run brass and woodwind lines separately, then together, to improve balance.
Dynamic Awareness: Over-exaggerate crescendos and decrescendos in warm-ups to reinforce shaping.
Tempo Stability: Have winds play with a metronome before adding percussion to ensure the drummer doesn’t need to hold the tempo alone.
Intonation Practice: Work on sustained chords, especially between saxophones and brass, to ensure tuning is locked in.
This small but well-balanced band should focus on dynamics, blend, and phrasing to bring out the lyrical beauty of the piece. The drummer’s role is critical in maintaining the flow, and the saxophones need to ensure balance with the flutes and clarinet.

As we gear up for our upcoming performance, it's crucial that each of us steps up and takes our role seriously.
To the 9th graders, The players with attitude: your lack of commitment is disappointing, and now you stand as your own entity. Your level of commitment will be clearly reflected in your performance at the concert. We all will perform Pulsar, but only the 9th graders will perform a portion of Santa's Holiday.
The players that play: Your hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed. You set the standard, and I want you to keep pushing forward. I have a new tune for you- Swing, Santa Swing. We will also perform The Christmas Song. In order to do this I am adding other Players that Play to this group. We will need to rehearse on AC days at advisement. I have passes for you for today!
Nat King Cole, born Nathaniel Adams Coles on March 17, 1919, in Montgomery, Alabama, was an iconic American jazz pianist and vocalist. Cole began his music career in the late 1930s as a jazz pianist, forming the King Cole Trio in 1937. His smooth piano playing gained recognition, but it was his baritone singing voice that made him a star.
Cole achieved widespread popularity in the 1940s with hits like "Straighten Up and Fly Right" and "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)." His voice's warm, velvety tone helped him transition to mainstream pop, where he became a pioneer as one of the first African American musicians to have a regular radio show and a TV show, The Nat King Cole Show, in 1956.
Despite facing racial discrimination throughout his career, Cole broke barriers for Black performers in the U.S. He remained a major influence in both jazz and popular music until his death from lung cancer on February 15, 1965. Some of his most enduring hits include "Unforgettable," "Mona Lisa," and "L-O-V-E." His legacy continues as one of the greatest voices of the 20th century.
