What are S.O.P.s?
Standard Operating Procedures
- A set of fixed instructions or steps that standardize some procedure in a class.
- Usually in flow chart OR list form.
- Gives students voice in how the class is run.
- Behavioral OR academic
Why S.O.P.s?
- Efficiency/Effective Use of Time
- Student Voice & Ownership
- Student Independence
- Tool for Problem Solving
- Build 21st Century Skills
Reasons for creating an S.O.P.s
Do you have routines in your classroom that students do not know how to do? Do you have the same question being asked over and over again? Are your students confused on how to do specific things or tasks?
Examples:
- What to do when I’m done
- How do I get materials
- What to do when I’m stuck or have a question
- What do I do when I need to use the bathroom
- Independent work time
- What if my iPad/Chromebook is not working
Beginning Tips:
- SOPs should be created on things that are done on a repeated basis
- Can be created with students or by students
- Display them so they can be referenced
Two Types of Standard Operating Procedures
Procedural S.O.P.
- Often to ensure safety or compliance
- e.g. non-negotiable SOPs, like bus routines
- When there is one path to a solution
- e.g. hand washing, turning in an assignment
- A list of actionable items
- e.g. what to bring to class
Flowchart S.O.P.
- When there are multiple solutions to a problem
- e.g. common classroom computer issues
- There are multiple choices that may not have to go in a certain order
- e.g. during independent activities
- If you can apply “If…then…” statements
- e.g. what to do when you’re stuck
SOP flowcharts helps students to be:
- problem solvers
- self-directed learners
- independent thinkers
- proactive & solve problems before they happen

Creating an SOP
- Collect feedback from class or teacher identified to identify potential solutions to the problem.
- *Remember...student can suggest or make SOPs too!
- Organize feedback as a sequence of events that may lead to a solution.
- Provide options to allow for continued problem solving when an individual solution will not work.
- Publish the SOP(s) on chart paper and post on walls.
- Provide feedback loops to allow for continued problem solving.
