Description: Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces is a Web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn't know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage and ALEKS avoids multiple-choice questions.
What it is used for: In contrast to standardized tests, which typically result in numerical measures of achievement or “aptitude”, the outcome of an ALEKS assessment consists in (i) the precise and comprehensive delineation of an individual’s competence in a subject in the form of his or her knowledge state describing all the types of problems mastered by that individual, and (ii) a comprehensive list of the topics the individual is ready to learn (referred to in Knowledge Space Theory as the outer fringe of that individual’s knowledge state).

How teachers/administrators log in: All staff members will receive an email from the data department with their usernames and passwords.
How students log in: Students in grades K-4 do not have their own student accounts. The elementary school students’ grades can be followed through the Parent Portal. Students in grades 5-12 who have never logged in to the portal account should use the following step-by-step instructions to create student portal accounts:
Log into the portal
Enter the student’s username and password.
The initial username is the student’s ID number (lunch code)
The initial password is the student’s first name (as listed in infinite campus with the first letter capitalized) and first three letters of their birth month (first letter is capitalized) and numerical date of the day of their birth and the four digits of their birth year. Please note that at Diley and Harmon middle schools the password is the student’s first name as it is listed in Infinite Campus followed by the student ID number.
Example – for a student named Billy Smith, formal name William, student ID 123456, and birthday June 5, 1998: Username: 123456 Password: WilliamJun51998. For a Harmon/Diley student, the password would be William123456.
Once logged in, the students will be forced to change their password and to enter an email address for password retrieval in the event the password is forgotten.
