Sustainability

"Look after the land and the land will look after you, destroy the land and it will destroy you."

Aboriginal Proverb

Adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.

Aviation is one of the fastest-growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions. The EU is taking action to reduce aviation emissions in Europe and working with the international community to develop measures with global reach.

Revision of the EU ETS Directive concerning aviation

On 14 July 2021, the European Commission adopted a series of legislative proposals for available translations of the preceding linkEN••• setting out how it intends to achieve climate neutrality in the EU by 2050, including the intermediate target of an at least 55% net reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

The package proposes to revise several pieces of EU climate legislation, including the EU ETS, Effort Sharing Regulation, transport and land use legislation, setting out in real terms the ways in which the Commission intends to reach EU climate targets under the European Green Deal.

To achieve climate neutrality, the European Green Deal sets out the need to reduce transport emissions by 90% by 2050 (compared to 1990-levels). The aviation sector will have to contribute to the reduction. For more information +

SDG AIRLINES is testing a TaxiBot in collaboration with Schiphol Airport. The TaxiBot is a hybrid towing vehicle that will make taxiing more sustainable shortly. This innovative trial contributes to the Virtual Cargo Group's commitment to reduce emissions from ground operations to carbon neutrality by 2030, including emissions from the ground operations of VGC Cargo's cargo fleet.

Lighting in the warehouses

SDG cargo warehouses, a new energy-efficient lighting system has replaced the traditional system, resulting in 80% savings (reduction of energy and maintenance costs) and avoiding 285 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

Together with you, we are striving for 100% CO2 neutrality in airfreight transport.

From now on, we give you the choice: The choice of being able to reduce the CO2 emissions of your shipments! The Add-on Service “Sustainable Choice” is available on all routes with a freighter segment, for all product groups and all customers worldwide.

Here you will find out how to get transparency about your CO2 footprint, book Sustainable Aviation Fuel or offset your CO2 emissions, and get your confirmation.

Projects that we support and commit to

Zero Emission

The Alliance for Zero Emission Aviation aims to prepare the aviation ecosystem for the entry into service of hydrogen- and electric-powered aircraft, to ensure that air transport contributes to Europe's 2050 climate neutrality objective. It will gather representatives of aircraft manufacturers, airlines, airports, energy companies and fuel providers, standardization and certification agencies, passenger and environmental interest groups and regulators.

Fly Net Zero

Fly Net Zero is the commitment of airlines to achieve net zero carbon by 2050.

At the 77th IATA Annual General Meeting in Boston, USA, on 4 October 2021, a resolution was passed by IATA member airlines committing them to achieving net-zero carbon emissions from their operations by 2050. This pledge brings air transport in line with the objectives of the Paris agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

To succeed, it will require the coordinated efforts of the entire industry (airlines, airports, air navigation service providers, manufacturers) and significant government support.

Aviation Alliance

Our Aviation Alliance is grouping European Airlines and Airports and was launched with the aim to support Fit for 55. We are strongly committed to contributing to reaching the objectives set out by the Paris Climate Agreement. We see an opportunity for Europe to become a global leader in decarbonizing aviation.

We aim to achieve net-zero emissions in 2050 and simultaneously prevent carbon leakage and maintain European connectivity.
