Energy services have become a strategic pillar in the decarbonisation of transport and logistics systems. Covering maritime, aviation, rail, road, and port operations, these services ensure the safe, efficient, and increasingly sustainable supply of fuels and power to all transport modes.
In the maritime sector, traditional fuels like IFO 380, Marine Diesel Oil (MDO), and VLSFO are still widely used, but are being complemented by LNG, biodiesel, and emerging options such as ammonia, methanol, and green hydrogen. Onshore power supply (OPS) systems are also being deployed to allow ships to plug into the grid while at berth, reducing emissions in port areas.
In aviation, kerosene-based Jet-A1 remains standard, but SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) is gaining ground, with hydrogen and electric propulsion under development for short-haul flights. Efficient and certified refuelling services are crucial in this evolving context.
Road transport is transitioning through the expansion of gas stations (LNG/CNG) and the growing presence of hydrogen refuelling stations for long-haul trucking. Meanwhile, electric charging infrastructure is scaling up for light commercial and last-mile vehicles.
In the rail sector, most shunting locomotives and many mainline units still run on diesel, but there is increasing investment in hybrid, battery-electric, and hydrogen-powered alternatives. The goal is to electrify or decarbonise non-electrified lines while maintaining operational reliability.
Even port cargo handling equipment—including cranes, straddle carriers, reachstackers, and terminal tractors—is undergoing energy transition. Many terminals are investing in electric or hybrid models to reduce emissions and noise while improving energy efficiency.
Energy services must therefore support multiple energy vectors, requiring:
Dedicated storage and supply infrastructure
Specialised equipment and vehicles
Qualified personnel and safety systems
Close coordination with regulatory frameworks
These services are more than operational—they are a foundation for sustainable logistics, enabling transport modes and infrastructure to align with climate goals and deliver cleaner, smarter, and future-ready mobility.
