1.5 Balanced and unbalanced

Demo :

• Nerf Gun (home built)

Round robin -

• Mass from a rubber band
• Floating test tube inside boiling tube
• A tray
• Toy parachute (to be dropped)
• A magnet hanging from stand - and single magnet
• Balanced Pully (two equal masses either side)

• A Constant velocity car (home)

Students wander around identifying the force pairs and saying if Balanced

Risk assessment:

• No risk- pressure quite low - just donot point at students and follow CLEAAPS guidelines when firing fixed to desk

Risk assessment:

• None- but keep an eye on the more fun equipment (car) - make sure students understand constant velocity car.

# Target:

• Identify familiar situations of balanced and unbalanced forces

• Define equilibrium

• Identify when the speed or direction of motion of an object changes

• Present observations in a table with help

• Describe the difference between balanced and unbalanced forces

• Describe situations that are in equilibrium

• Explain why the speed or direction of motion of objects can change

• Present observations in a table including force arrow drawings

• Explain the difference between balanced and unbalanced forces

• Describe a range of situations that are in equilibrium

• Explain why the speed or direction of motion of objects can change using force arrows

• Predict and present changes in observations for unfamiliar situations
