Sustainability Capsule is aiming to manage the housing and poverty rates in Durham, North Carolina by teaching construction concepts while building affordable housing using 2-liter soda bottles.
Durham, North Carolina
In many traditionally affordable communities, especially central Durham, there is a shortage of more than 35,000 affordably-priced homes for very low-income households, as well as increasing housing costs for the other areas of Durham.
Sustainability Capsule“s plan is to work with the city of Durham to build affordable housing. We will use 2-liter soda bottles and concrete to build them, teaching the volunteers as they work for their 500 square foot home. The bottles can easily be donated or located to reduce construction costs. We would like to start out with a community of 10 two-story houses with a small rehab center in the middle. We also plan to give small incentives for those who plan to adopt a moss lawn.

All around Durham, it is getting harder to keep a shelter as the rate of housing prices rise, leaving 31% of the population cost-burdened. Sustainability Capsule aims to help change this by teaching construction concepts to the homeless and those who choose to volunteer while building affordable housing using recycled 2-liter soda bottles. We are not only tackling the housing crisis in Durham with a sustainable approach to reduce global warming, but we are also preparing people for the workforce by giving them real construction experience
Sustainability Capsule is working to tackle the housing crisis in Durham, NC. There is a severe shortage of affordable rental housing in this city. There is currently no reusable material being used to construct buildings, and as a result the landfills are larger than they could be. We plan to take water bottles, fill them with trash, and construct sustainable housing using concrete to put them together. This will help cost-burdened families, some of the homeless and those in poverty, as well as reduce greenhouse gases and landfills.
Sustainability Capsule is a small team that is aiming to make Durham North Carolina further develop the community by constructing affordable housing. Our approach is environmentally friendly and sustainable because we care about how people are living.
