Paideia

Greek for "the upbringing of a child"

In order to engage further into select historical topics and events, I have implemented Paideia seminars into my curriculum.  The goal of Paideia seminars are to look deeper into select events and topics in United States history and have structured discussions in the classroom.  I have attached a guideline describing Paideia seminars.  Included in the document is a link to the Paideia website which further discusses the philosophy of Paideia seminars.  I use Paideia seminars approximately 20 times during the school year.  The seminars are often held on Fridays and pertain to the topic that is being studied at the time.  During the week of a seminar, the students will be assigned a Paideia Prep worksheet.  It is assigned two days prior to the seminar.  The Paideia Prep introduces the topic that will be discussed and has the students prepare answers to topics that they might use during the discussions.  My goal for each seminar is for each student to significantly contribute at least three times by voicing their thoughts and opinions during the seminar.
