Week 11: Managing Stress pt. 2—Are You Procrastinating?
Procrastination—it happens to the best of us. You might feel overwhelmed by assignments or unsure where to start, leading to a cycle of delay and stress. The good news? You can overcome procrastination and reduce stress by taking small, actionable steps.
Procrastination often stems from:
Feeling Overwhelmed: Big tasks can feel unmanageable.
Perfectionism: Worrying about doing things perfectly can make starting difficult.
Lack of Motivation: It’s hard to focus when you’re not feeling motivated or energized.
Distractions: Phones, social media, and other activities can pull your attention away.
Understanding why you procrastinate is the first step toward breaking the habit.
Break It Down:
Large projects feel less intimidating when you break them into smaller, manageable tasks.
Start Small:
Commit to working on a task for just 5–10 minutes. Once you get started, you’re more likely to keep going.
Set Priorities:
Focus on the most important tasks first. Use tools like to-do lists or priority planners to stay organized.
Eliminate Distractions:
Turn off your phone, close unnecessary tabs, and create a quiet workspace.
Use the Pomodoro Technique:
Work in short, focused intervals (e.g., 25 minutes) followed by a 5-minute break.
Reward Yourself:
Celebrate small victories—like finishing a section of an assignment—with something you enjoy.
Ask for Help:
If you’re stuck, reach out to a professor, tutor, or classmate for guidance.
Stress and procrastination often go hand in hand. Take care of your mind and body to keep stress in check:
Exercise: A quick walk or yoga session can boost your mood.
Stay Hydrated and Eat Well: Fuel your brain with healthy snacks and plenty of water.
Get Enough Sleep: A rested mind is more focused and productive.
Remember: Procrastination doesn’t define you—it’s a habit you can change. Start small, stay consistent, and you’ll see progress in no time. Phoenix College is here to support you every step of the way.
You’ve got this—keep moving forward!
