Week 1: Getting Started at Phoenix College!
Welcome to Phoenix College
As your instructors, we’re excited to welcome you to a new semester! Whether this is your first college class or you’re nearing graduation, we want you to know one thing right away: you are not alone in this journey. Faculty, staff, and your fellow students are here to support your success from day one!
What’s a Syllabus and Why Should You Read It?
Your course syllabus is more than just a document. It is your roadmap for the semester. It outlines what you will learn, how you will be graded, important deadlines, and how to get in touch with your instructor for the course. Reading it carefully will help you stay organized, avoid surprises, and feel more confident as the class moves forward.
Tip: Bring your questions about the syllabus to class or office hours. Clarifying things early helps you and your classmates get off to a strong start.
What Are Office Hours and Why Should You Go?
Every faculty member at Phoenix College holds weekly office hours, which are scheduled times when we are available to meet with students outside of class. Think of them as opportunities to ask questions, review assignments, or have a conversation about the course or your broader academic goals.
If you feel nervous about reaching out, know this: we really do want to get to know you. College is about learning, and that includes asking questions and exploring ideas. Many professors are also happy to chat briefly after class or respond to questions over email.
Why Communicating with Instructors Matters
Connecting with your instructors can help you:
Build confidence. Feel more comfortable participating in class and navigating college life.
Stay on track. Get help early, stay motivated, and avoid last-minute surprises.
Explore opportunities. Learn more about your field of interest and potential career paths.
Gain strong references. Relationships built over time can lead to great recommendation letters.
Expand your network. Professors often know about internships, scholarships, or events that may not be widely advertised.
How to Communicate Effectively
Understand expectations. Read the syllabus and follow up during office hours if you have questions.
Be clear and concise. Keep emails or questions focused, especially when you are asking about assignments, deadlines, or class content.
Be proactive. If you are feeling confused or overwhelmed, reach out early. Coming prepared with specific questions shows initiative.
Be respectful. Use a professional tone, arrive on time for appointments, and let your instructor know if you need to cancel or reschedule.
Email Etiquette 101
Send requests early. Try not to wait until the last minute.
Allow time for replies. Your instructors may not be able to respond immediately, so plan ahead.
Use a clear subject line. This helps your instructor understand the purpose of your message.
Start with a polite greeting. “Dear Professor [Last Name]” or “Hello [Name]” works well.
Write professionally. Use full sentences, proper grammar, and avoid abbreviations or overly casual language.
Proofread. Always check your message for spelling and grammar before you send it.
Pro Tip
If you are not sure how to start a conversation with your professor, ask about something specific, such as clarifying an assignment or following up on something you found interesting in class. This can make the interaction more comfortable and meaningful.
Your instructors are here to help you succeed, and it all starts with open, respectful communication. Reach out early, ask questions often, and do not be afraid to speak up!
We are glad you are here. Let’s have a great semester!
