CAS Spotlight

Juniors and Seniors at Hill-Freedman participate in the IB CAS program, which allows them to extend their learning by doing creative, physical, and service experiences. Below, we've highlighted some outstanding experiences which feature our students' passions and interests.

Original Poetry

Mitchell's goal was to "create a collection of poems about my life experiences and topics about community, race and world problems." Afterwards, he reflected: "These poems have challenged me to fully submerge myself into the topics that I wanted to uncover about myself or things that matter to me that needs to be addressed."

Painting Murals

Sam set a goal to work on a mural painting in her room. She said: "I really like art and want to tap into my creative flow again, the outcome will be hopefully that I've improved with motivation."

Afterwards, she reflected: "this experience reminded me how painting was very therapeutic for me and I often forget why I started to paint in the first place."

Check out this time lapse video of her progress.

Making Sweatpants

Rhian set a goal to sew a pair of sweatpants. She said: "Once I found something I was passionate enough about, I knew I could make it my CAS experience. After I figured that out it was just a matter of planning how I was going to go about my project of making stylish sweatpants."

Afterwards, she reflected: "It felt great being able to be involved in an experience like this that really allows students to find something they are interested in and have a chance to do something of that nature for a project."

Original Paintings

Giordan decided to create some original artwork. She said she: "recently started painting and I love it and I just want to get better and better."

Once she finished, she reflected: "As I was painting I realized some techniques I didn't notice I had, like certain ways I angle the brushes while blending. I identified strengths I didn't know I had before by taking my time and not rushing as much."

Learning to Make Indian Food

Doug decided that he would learn how to cook different Indian dishes. He hoped to "continue to make more dishes like this moving forward which would improve my cooking skills."

Afterwards, he reflected: I learned that cooking takes discipline because if you can't listen or follow the instructions carefully then you'll mess up the dish when it's finished. I also learned that through perseverance, you can achieve different challenges or obstacles and be successful.
