Have you ever heard of the World Cup? Well if you haven’t then let me tell you what it is! The World Cup is the biggest soccer tournament in the world, held every 4 years. The world cup is a tournament that reportedly reaches 1.5 billion people worldwide. It also has a large influence on the internet with 93.6 million posts that delivered 5.95 billion social engagements and cumulatively reached 262 billion. While it is normally a competition between 32 nations with only one winner, for the 2026 world cup the 32 teams have been expanded to 48 teams and is being hosted in 3 countries: USA, Mexico, and Canada. The tournament will also be held in Philadelphia—1 of the 16 total host cities.
It is without a doubt a huge honor for us to be able to host such a prestigious tournament. This tournament will bring a big change in Philadelphia as the 2 of 12 fields that are going to be used for training for the World Cup tournament, are part of the FDR Park Plan. The FDR plan are plans to remodel FDR to “reimagine a historic Olmsted Park to serve 21st century Philadelphians.” The FDR Park Plan also adds baseball fields, basketball and tennis court, playgrounds, picnic lawns, and more. The plans are completely independent of the World Cup, though they are both involved in the previously mentioned 2 fields.
Football fans or any sports enthusiast should get ready as the World Cup is finally coming to Philadelphia!
