The Grand Garden

The winter has been tough here in Philadelphia, but as spring approaches, the fallen white snow will slowly turn into greeneries. The good news is, you don’t have to stray far to see it, as Furness High School will have a garden for students!

I would like to call it “The Grand Garden”, not necessarily because it’s going to be big, but because it is partially funded by the Philly Service Award. It has been such a great honor for the school to get such an award. Initially, Ms. Orfanelli’s AP Environmental Science students wanted to utilize the grant to clean around the river to build a garden. However, as time went by, they figured they could use the funds to help the garden in our school!

This part of the garden is going to be 8 ft. by 8 ft. in size, and is going to be used to plant food for the students. We will soon get a new source of food from the garden! We will start by planting cool-season vegetables, like winter greens, spinach, kale, and cabbage. As the weather warms, we will plant more warm-season vegetables, like lettuce and tomatoes. Aside from the vegetables, there will also be flowers planted in the garden.

As the garden will be available for students soon, we can use the garden as a food resource too! Thanks to Ms. Orfanelli and her Advanced Placement Environmental Science students, the garden will create a new, beautiful view of Furness High School.
