Furness and its Uniform Policy

Do you ever think about why some students always wear a Furness Falcons black t-shirt and black pants, while others don’t? What’s the official school policy? What do students think about it?

According to Mr. Guyon, the Assistant Principal, you’re expected to wear a gray polo shirt or Furness t-shirt and black pants with no rips or tears. The school’s goal is to improve attendance, so they do not enforce the entire uniform policy. However, they do enforce it for shoes and don’t allow slides or crocs. The school will allow white and/or orange clothing if it is of appropriate length. All school pride and sports uniforms are allowed. You can buy the black Furness t-shirt in our main office for $12. You can buy the gray polo shirt for $15, but you can also get it from any retail shop.

Some students dislike wearing uniforms. One student says that he doesn't like wearing uniforms because in the past he lived in Tanzania where they only wore normal clothes to school, so when he came to Furness he had to change his habit and it wasn’t easy for him, saying “what is in your heart is not easy to change.” Another student doesn't wear the uniforms because he doesn't like how it looks and he thinks it should be changed.

In my opinion, I'm okay with uniforms because I don't have to rummage through all my clothes in the morning to see what I will wear. But some days I just want to wear what I want to wear; I sometimes have an outfit in mind. When I don't wear a uniform, no one says anything. We as students should be grateful that Furness has a flexible policy. Other schools might give students a lot more trouble for not wearing school uniforms.
